From building model airplanes as a child to earning a glider rating in college; from basic flight training at the Naval Air Station in Beeville, Texas, to his long career flying for a major U.S. airline, Steven Marshall Black pursued his passion for flying. Captain Black was an active senior pilot for the same airline from 1980 until he lost his brave battle with cancer on December 7, 2013.
Captain Black visited Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch campus in the northwest Texas Panhandle about 30 years ago and never forgot that visit. And, while Mr. Black was impressed with the campus, it was the children, and the staff that cared for them, that stayed in his mind and heart. Jim Callaway, Captain Black’s dear friend for many years, told us that Captain Black was a big advocate of helping someone help themselves.
Cal Farley’s independent living philosophy is a core tenet of all Cal Farley’s programs and services. Whether at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch campus, Family Resource Centers and other community-based services, or alumni support, Cal Farley’s is all about helping children, families, and alumni help themselves. Helping young people to discover and follow their passions is a big part of several Cal Farley’s programs, including Adventure and Community-as-Lab programs at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch campus.
During his lifetime, Captain Black was a friend to the children and families who depend on Cal Farley’s programs and services. Then he made his gift of a lifetime through his estate. Mr. Callaway told us that Captain Black likened Cal Farley’s work with children and families as lifesaving work. We feel deeply honored to be included in Captain Black’s will, along with two of his closest friends.
Cal Farley’s honors caring friends, like Captain Black, who remember us in their will or trust, through acceptance into the Cal and Mimi Farley Heritage Society. With approval, Cal Farley’s will place a modest granite paver on the grounds of the Memorial Gardens on Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch campus.
If you have remembered Cal Farley’s in your estate plans, it would be a tremendous honor to thank you for your commitment to help Cal Farley’s with its current and future work with children and families.
